Life Sciences 3A03: Health and Disease

Course Description: 

This course is broken into four modules that look at different topics of human health and disease.  Each topic is examined from several different perspectives, from the molecular biology of the disease, through the physiological effects, to current and potential treatments.  While we focus upon the cell biology, genetics, and biochemistry of each disease we also consider the social and economic factors that affect disease persistence and treatment.  The concept of disease eradication will also be considered.

Course Objectives:

1) Using short,  writing assignments that encourage students to focus upon using the primary research literature to extend concepts discussed in lecture (Reynolds et al, 2012)

2) Providing evidence-based proposals to address an issue in human health, often specifically global health such as disease eradication.

3) Putting a science-based solution to disease prevention or treatment in the context of real-world scenarios that are wrought with the complications of social, cultural, political, and economic circumstances.
